Whatever is true...

Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things….and the peace of God will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9

Does your thought life cause you consternation? Do you wish you could quiet the cacophony of fearful, anxious, angry, critical thoughts that are bouncing around in your head? Do you just want a moment of peace!?! This verse is a precious and gentle admonition that provides the key to a peace that passes understanding. In fact, there are two verses in this same chapter (verse 7 and 9) that specifically promise us this peace, but it requires a commitment and some action on our part. We need to pray (verse 6) and take control of our thinking patterns. Romans 12:2 teaches us that we can “be transformed by the renewal of our minds.” There is hope – we can control our thoughts and we can be changed.

Look again at today’s verse. Did you read this carefully? Are you tempted like me to read this a little too quickly and passively - it’s a list – it’s familiar. Can I encourage you to read it again? And again….slowly? Whatever is true…honorable…just…pure…lovely…commendable…excellent…worthy of praise. When we consciously make an effort to direct our thinking, the mental chaos will subside and we will begin to experience inner peace.

Lord, help me to daily focus my thinking on things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, worthy of praise so I may experience your peace.
